Monster Roll from Dan Blank on Vimeo.

This. Looks. Amazing.

From their FB page: “When sea monsters attack Los Angeles, a network of sushi chefs honor an ancient code to maintain balance between man and the sea: to kill only what they eat, and eat all that they kill.”

The producers of Monster Roll are going to start a kickstarter soon to make this movie a reality. Stay tuned to their FB page for more details!

You might have guessed by now that I’m a *bit* obsessed with sushi. When I visited Japan for the first (and second) time, I bolted straight to Sushi Zanmai located outside the Tsukiji fish market. I ordered the salmon. It was transcendental.
This weekend I was bowled over by the documentary “Jiro Dreams of Sushi“, following the travails of a 3-Michelin-starreed Tokyo sushi restaurant run by the legend that is 85-year-old Jiro Ono. WATCH IT. For anyone who loves sushi, or is obsessed with Japan, or wants an inside look at the Japanese seafood industry – this film is for you. The story inevitably contains undertones of dwindling fish stocks and dire pleas for ocean conservation. Jiro laments the disappearance of some species alongside increasingly smaller catches of even the stalwart fish.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi is a 2011 Japanese documentary film directed by David Gelb. The film follows Jiro Ono, an 85 year old sushi master and owner of Sukiyabashi Jiro, on his continuing quest to perfect the art of sushi and his elder son Yoshikazu’s struggle with living up to the legacy of his father. The film briefly contrasts this with the younger son Takashi running a mirror-image restaurant, except with a more relaxed feel.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi debuted in the US in 2011 at the Provincetown International Film Festival[2] and was an official selection of the Tribeca Film Festival[3] in the same year. [Source: Wikipedia]

If that’s not convincing enough, you can’t argue with the trailer:

The imagery is amazing – Gelb is an expert at interweaving music and striking camera angles as he details Jiro’s moving story.  This film boasts an impressive score to accompany the gorgeous cinematography, including music by Phillip Glass, Mozart, and Bach.

Jiro and his son preparing some kickass sushi…yummmmmmm

Are you hungry yet? Cause I definitely am.

For your Friday viewing pleasure, I bring you the “Story of Sushi” – this video is kind of like Thomas the Tank Engine (the PBS show with the miniature people) meets the ASPCA commercial with the Sarah McLaughlin song. Must watch – the set design is incredible!

Water Blogged, the blog of the Living Oceans Society, has a very nice post up about why it is important to educate yourself about sushi. You should really go there and read the article, but I really enjoyed this interview with sushi chef Hajime Sato. He describes his motivation for and transition to sustainable seafood – without a sugar-coating.

Frankly, I’m a little ashamed to have my first post be all human-interest-y, without a single hypodermic penis in sight. Still,  I can’t resist highlighting this ludicrous NYT article about couples who bicker over sustainability. NYT human interest stories always end up making you hate everyone in it, and this is no exception.

Mr. Fleming, who says he became committed to Ms. Cobb “before her high-priestess phase,” describes their conflicts as good-natured — mostly.

But he refuses to go out to eat sushi with her anymore, he said, because he cannot stand to hear her quiz the waiters.

“None of it is sustainable or local,” he said, “and I am not eating cod or rockfish.”

That’s so sad. The guy lives in Santa Barbara CA and he can’t find tasty seafood to eat? (Also, cod and rockfish are not necessarily sustainable.) I’m no fan of preachiness, but what surprised me about this article was how trivial all the disagreements were. He can’t stand to have his girlfriend ask where the seafood comes from? Another woman’s sister can’t be bothered to recycle cardboard? Someone’s mother won’t eat off reusable plates? This isn’t exactly selling all of one’s possessions and living off the grid in a van down by the river.

But maybe that’s just my delicate ladybrain talking, since according to the article:

Women, Ms. Birkhahn said, often see men as not paying sufficient attention to the home. Men, for their part, “really want to make a large impact and aren’t interested in a small impact,” she said.

How can men make manly large impacts? The NYT doesn’t say, but somehow I doubt that the people in this article spend all day writing their representatives and hand-feeding injured sharks. Perhaps the only kind of conservation that really sells is the dinosaur-riding ass-kicking kind.

Palm, meet face. The associated press reports:

Blowfish, while extremely poisonous if not prepared properly, is considered a delicacy in Japan and is consumed by thrill-seeking gourmets.

Iwase said the seven men ordered sashimi and grilled blowfish testicles at the restaurant Monday night.

Shortly after, they developed limb paralysis and breathing trouble and started to lose consciousness – typical signs of blowfish poisoning – and were rushed to a hospital for treatment, Iwase said.

A 68-year-old diner remained hospitalized in critical condition with respiratory failure and two others, aged 55 and 69, were in serious condition, he said.

“It’s scary. If you go to a decent-looking restaurant that serves fugu, you would assume a cook has a proper fugu license,” Iwase said, using the Japanese term for blowfish.

Really? Come one people that isn’t thrill seeking. Thrill seeking involves doing something that you know you will survive but gives you the illusion of facing death. Eating poison kills you. That is gambling with your life. And we are the smart species….
